How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Day at Daycare

Starting daycare is a big milestone for both tamariki and their whānau. While this transition can bring excitement, it may also come with a few nerves—and that’s completely normal! A little preparation can help your child feel more comfortable and confident. Here are some practical steps to ensure a smooth and positive start at daycare.

1. Visit the Centre Together

Familiarising your child with their new environment before their first day helps ease anxiety. At Small Sprouts, we offer transition visits where tamariki can explore, play, and meet their kaiako in a relaxed setting.

Tip: Bring your child along for a short visit to let them see the play areas, interact with other children, and get used to the space.

2. Talk About Daycare in a Positive Way

Your child picks up on your emotions, so speaking positively about daycare can help them feel more excited and secure. Use reassuring language to set a positive tone:

  • "You’ll have so much fun playing with new friends!"

  • "Your teachers are really kind and can’t wait to meet you."

  • "There will be storytime, music, and outdoor play every day!"

Tip: Read books about starting daycare to help your child visualise the experience.

3. Practise the Morning Routine

Creating a predictable routine can help your child feel more at ease. A few days before starting daycare, try a practice run:

  • Wake up at the same time you will on daycare days.

  • Pack their daycare bag together.

  • Drive to the centre (even if you’re not going inside) to get used to the trip.

Tip: Keep mornings calm and positive—avoid rushing, as it can increase stress for both you and your child.

4. Pack a Comfort Item

A familiar object from home can provide a sense of security in a new environment. Many tamariki feel reassured by bringing:

  • 🧸 A favourite soft toy

  • 🛏️ A small blanket

  • 📸 A family photo

Tip: Let your child choose what they’d like to bring—it gives them a sense of control and comfort.

5. Keep Goodbyes Short & Reassuring

Saying goodbye can be tough, but a quick, confident, and loving farewell can help your child settle in more easily.

  • ❌ Avoid lingering or sneaking away—this can increase anxiety.

  • ✅ Instead, try a simple goodbye routine:

  • 👋 Hug & kiss – "I love you!"

  • 😊 Reassure – "I’ll see you after lunch!"

  • 🚪 Leave confidently – Walk away without hesitation.

Tip: Most children settle quickly once engaged in an activity—trust the kaiako to support them!

6. Trust the Process

  • Every child adjusts differently—some settle in right away, while others need a little more time. This is completely normal!

  • At Small Sprouts, our experienced kaiako understand how to support tamariki through this transition with kindness, patience, and encouragement.

Tip: If your child takes longer to settle, stay consistent with the routine and trust that they’ll gain confidence over time.

A Positive Start for Your Child

With a little preparation and a reassuring approach, your child’s first day at daycare can be a positive and exciting milestone!
